Get ready friends we are going to have an exciting time!
Week 1: 2/10/12
Students will be given studio tour & intro to raku lecture.
DEMO: slab, pinch & coil building
Students will experiment making several small forms using each building method.
Students will be introduced to the first project.
Over the course of the week they should research & develop sketches for project #1
Think about making a small collage out of Xeroxed or cut paper images.

WEEK 2: 2/17/12
Review & begin working on forms
Project #1: 3 Stacked Forms
Students will explore clay using three different building techniques: Slab, pinch & coil building. The students will look at works by Peter Carl Fabergé and Kathy Butterly for inspiration. The final form should have 3 distinctly different forms & textures in the composition, a base/foot, middle and top. Students should carefully examine the works of the artists presented. How do many of these works address the table top? Are the bottoms all flat or do they have "legs?" Imagine how the volumes change as the viewer walks around the work. Think of visual "surprises" for the viewer as you work on your piece. Think about "color" as you develop each shape and form.

WEEKS 3 & 4: 2/24/12 and 3/2/12
Wheelthrowing Intensive
Students will focus on wheelthrowing. Students will learn how to use the wheel to make functional objects & learn how the wheel can be used to make sculptural forms. Students will make 3-6 wheelthrown vases with the option to add hand built elements. Students will be encouraged to make the pieces relate to each other using a common "theme" to unite the work.
